Quick answer: The Glock 19 Gen 6 is the same length and height as the Gen 5, about 1.4 oz lighter, and optic ready out of the box. The grip, beavertail, trigger guard and trigger face changed, so a Gen 5 holster may fit, but confirm it with the holster maker before you carry. Gen 5 magazines still work; barrels do not swap between generations.
This guide is built from Glock’s published specifications and holster makers’ own Gen 6 fit statements. We have not range-tested the Gen 6 or the holsters below; where a fit claim comes from a manufacturer, we say so.
Glock 19 Gen 6 vs Gen 5: specs side by side

| Overall length | 7.28 in | 7.28 in |
| Slide length | 6.85 in | 6.85 in |
| Overall width | 1.34 in | 1.35 in |
| Slide width | 1.00 in | 1.00 in |

The headline: outside dimensions are unchanged, so the Gen 6 carries and conceals like a Gen 5. The weight drop and the shorter trigger reach (2.68 in vs 2.76 in) are the measurable changes you will feel.
What changed in the Gen 6

- Grip: a fuller palm swell, an extended thumb rest, an enlarged beavertail and a new two-texture grip surface. Two backstraps ship with the pistol.
- Trigger guard and trigger: an undercut trigger guard, a shorter frame-to-trigger distance and a flat-faced trigger that keeps Glock’s Safe Action system.
- Slide: deeper-angled serrations.
- Optics: standard Gen 6 frames are optic ready, with three optic plates that let an optic screw directly into the slide. Guns.com reports the plates cover RMR, Shield/DeltaPoint/Holosun K and C-More footprints.
- Recoil system and barrel: a single recoil spring assembly replaces the Gen 5 dual spring, and Gen 6 barrels are not interchangeable with earlier generations.
Glock announced the G17, G19 and G45 Gen 6 on December 6, 2025, with shelf availability from January 20, 2026. Guns.com lists the MSRP at $745, the same as Gen 5 MOS models; street prices are often lower.
What did not change
- Length (7.28 in), height (5.04 in) and slide width (1.00 in).
- Standard capacity of 15 rounds. Guns.com reports Gen 3, Gen 4 and Gen 5 double-stack 9mm magazines function in the Gen 6.
- The Safe Action trigger system with no manual safety, and Glock’s 26 N published trigger pull.
Should you buy the Gen 6 or the Gen 5?
Buy the Gen 6 if you are buying new, want a red dot without a separate MOS model, or have medium-to-smaller hands that benefit from the shorter trigger reach. It is the model retailers are stocking now.
Consider the Gen 5 if you already own Gen 5 barrels or a light-bearing or tight-retention holster you rely on, or if you find a Gen 5 at a clear discount. Gen 5 stock is thinning; the standard Gen 5 G19 we track at Palmetto State Armory showed out of stock on October 26, 2026.
Handgun purchases ship to a licensed dealer (FFL) for a background check, and state and local laws apply. Confirm the exact configuration, sights and included plates on the product page before you buy.
Will your Gen 5 Glock 19 holster fit a Gen 6?

Often yes, but not always, and the makers word it differently:
- Safariland lists six Gen 6-compatible holsters (Incog X, Schema, Species, SOLIS, Gravity and Ballast) and says those models work with Gen 6 as they did with Gen 5. Its Gen 6 fits are non-light-bearing for now.
- Tulster says the Gen 6 is fully compatible with its holsters, naming the Profile, Profile+, OATH, ARC, Contour and Range+ series.
- We The People sells a dedicated Glock 19 Gen 6 optic cut IWB holster rather than relying on its Gen 5 mold.
- Guns.com reports that most Gen 5 holsters fit but advises testing retention, because of the larger beavertail and a slightly wider slide stop.
Check before you carry (with the pistol unloaded): the holster fully covers the trigger guard; the pistol clicks into retention and does not fall out when the holster is inverted; the beavertail does not bind on the holster body; your optic clears the sweat guard; and a light-bearing setup uses a holster listed for that exact Gen 6, light and optic combination.

What about the Glock 17 and 45 Gen 6?
The G17 Gen 6 and G45 Gen 6 launched alongside the G19 with the same grip, trigger, optic and recoil changes. The difference is size:
| Spec (Glock official) | G19 Gen 6 | G45 Gen 6 | G17 Gen 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barrel | 4.02 in | 4.02 in | 4.49 in |
| Slide length | 6.85 in | 6.85 in | 7.32 in |
| Overall length | 7.28 in | 7.44 in | 7.95 in |
| Height incl. magazine | 5.04 in | 5.47 in | 5.47 in |
| Width | 1.35 in | 1.35 in | 1.34 in |
| Weight, no magazine | 20.11 oz | 20.28 oz | 21.16 oz |
| Weight, loaded | 29.10 oz | 30.51 oz | 31.39 oz |
| Capacity | 15 | 17 | 17 |
| Trigger distance | 2.68 in | 2.68 in | 2.68 in |
G19 Gen 6: the shortest grip of the three (5.04 in tall, 15 rounds). The easiest of the three to conceal, especially appendix carry.
G45 Gen 6: the G19’s 6.85 in slide and 4.02 in barrel on a full-size grip (5.47 in tall, 17 rounds). More grip and two more rounds, but the longer grip is the part that prints most under a shirt.
G17 Gen 6: full-size slide and grip, 4.49 in barrel, 17 rounds. Best for home or duty use; the largest of the three to carry concealed.
Holsters are model-specific: a G19 Gen 6 holster is not automatically a G45 or G17 Gen 6 holster. Buy one the maker lists for your exact model and Gen 6. If you are choosing between sizes, our best concealed carry guns guide compares carry sizes.
